When we think of depression, we imagine the intense suffering of those who experience it first-hand – the feeling of profound sadness, the sense of loss of hope and the lack of energy to face daily challenges. But depression affects more than the person themselves; it has a profound effect on those around them. So one question becomes crucial: is it harder to suffer from depression or to see loved ones suffering?
Postpartum depression – what changes happen in moms’ brains after giving birth
Having a baby can trigger a variety of strong emotions in women, from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety, and they may even experience various types of depression. About one in seven women may develop postpartum depression (PPD). It most commonly occurs within 6 weeks after childbirth, but symptoms can start earlier – during pregnancy – or later – up to a year after childbirth.
Depression and its management in the family
What to do when a loved one is experiencing depression? What NOT to do when you want to help someone with depression? When a member of our family or a close friend suffers from depression it is challenging for everyone, but depression is treatable and emotional and social support greatly improves treatment outcomes.
