Learning to live with schizophrenia

“No two people with schizophrenia are the same. Every individual is different. Every experience is different. […] There is also no right or wrong way to live with schizophrenia, but by learning from the experience of others, it is possible to prepare for what lies ahead and overcome obstacles along the way.”

Paul Arteel

Schizophrenia affects the way a person understands and interacts with the world around them, and this often has a strong impact on the whole system they are part of. It is a chronicpsychiatric disorder and there are times when you feel overwhelmed. We know how difficult it can be to manage the symptoms of this disorder.

We, the specialists of Med Anima Clinic, are here to offer you information and support, help and treatment. Life with this condition can be lived, but with new rules. We are here for you and – to support you in your everyday life – we offer you this Guide with information to make your life easier.

What is Schizophrenia?

It is considered to be a neurocognitive disorderwhich affects almost all mental domains (thinking, perception, will, affectivity, motor behaviours, personality).

Schizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder, multisystemic, characterized by alteration of the whole personality and affecting approximately one in 100 people worldwide. It occurs in people of all social classes and ethnicities and affects both men and women equally.

Numerous comorbidities are associated with both psychiatric (depression, addictive disorders, cognitive impairment) and somatic (hyperprolactinemia, sexual dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension).

Can I still have a normal life with this condition?

SCHIZOPHRENIA IS A TREATABLE ILLNESS

The only way to control the symptoms of schizophrenia is with antipsychotic medication in combination with non-medication supportive therapies. One in four people with this diagnosis make a full recovery within five years, and the rest of the patients show an improvement in their symptoms. After the first psychotic episode, three quarters of patients who stop medication relapse within a year. If, after remission of the first psychotic episode, the patient correctly administers his medication, this figure can be halved

In the Med Anima blog you can find a series of articles about schizophrenia to help you understand and manage this condition:

GENETIC TESTING

The information obtained from the genetic test helps to select the right medication and dose, significantly reducing the treatment time and avoiding or minimising side effects.

COMPUTERIZED COGNITIVE STIMULATION

Providing a computer-assisted cognitive stimulation therapy program to patients with schizophrenia improves cognitive functioning and may also influence psychotic symptoms.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AND PSYCHOEDUCATION

They are designed to help the patient explore their most difficult emotions and experiences, including feelings of anxiety or depression, along with a broader knowledge of information about the condition.

In Med Anima clinic we offer both psychiatric consultation and treatment as well as
this series of non-medical supportive therapies to make life with this condition as close to normal as possible.
